I get into my car in the morning, I notice that the lights from the gas station are bright this morning, brighter than before, I am thinking that they must have had new lights installed. The temperature is cool and it’s breezy, I’m glad I wore my jacket this morning. As I’m driving down the road I smell marijuana, this distracts me for a split second and I have to apply the brakes hard to stop safely behind the car in front of me which is currently at a red light. As I sit waiting for the light to change, I notice a large bird swoop into the tree that is next to the stop light. Moving on again, I notice that it is getting light earlier and earlier in the morning, I can actually see the sky kissed by the rising sun above the refinery buildings along the highway. As I drive under the underpass and on to the freeway I am assaulted by the smell of petroleum, I have to shake my head and breathe through my mouth to clear the sensory overload this causes.
As I travel down the highway a truck comes up behind me and quickly swerves into the next lane to get ahead of me and continues to roar down the highway. I wonder what is going on in the mind of that person who is driving as if they are in a big hurry.
As I near my place of work I come to a stoplight that has a sign next to the light which says: “No Right on Red.” I have learned by a couple of past experiences that most people do not see that sign or just don’t choose to obey it and so they honk at me for obeying the sign instead of turning right on red and ignoring it. So, I glance behind me to see if there are any other cars coming up behind me that might honk at me because I am actually doing what the sign says.
After turning when the light turns green, I notice again the sky becoming lighter and I can more easily read the signs on the buildings that I am passing by in my car. The increased amount of light noticeably improves my mood.
